Athlete Spotlight: Kim R.

What made you choose CrossFit True?

A PTA Challenge through our children’s elementary school; I couldn’t pass up trying CrossFit at such a great price so I also encouraged my husband Nic to complete the challenge too. Our 3rd child was just over 1yr old & we were finally in a place where we could try to incorporate regular fitness into our lives. 


I had a restricted diet while pregnant with our son & had lost a lot of weight after giving birth but I had NO muscle...I was ready to wake muscles up that I hadn’t  been using & was ready to get toned up. 


How long have you been training with us?

Since 10/2107


What has been your proudest moment in the past 90 days?


  • Pushing past some anxiety to compete in my 1st competition (Average Joe); it was totally out of my comfort zone but I showed up, was encouraged and comforted by my teammates & other Team True members...I competed AND PR’d!


When your not at the gym, what do you do for work? What do you do for fun?


  • Any & everything that needs to be done - as a Domestic Goddess of 3 (AKA stay at home mom -except this mama doesn’t JUST stay at home) with a hubby who’s work requires traveling I often find 24hrs in a day to not be enough. 

  • Up until we had our 2nd child I was employed as a Social Worker for DCF.

  • I enjoy listening to music, cooking & feeding people & love to be outside (whether it’s beachin’ it, relaxing in the sun or doing yard work I enjoy being outdoors & active). 


How is your nutrition? How has it changed since joining CrossFit True?


  • I think of nutrition as a never-ending process; I’m always interested in learning new ways and different things to eat. Nic & I recently finished 3mos on RP; it was very challenging but I learned A LOT & definitely noticed major changes in my body. It’s kind of exciting & amazing to me that one can change their body SO much with diet alone. 


What are your 3 favorite movements/exercises? 


  • SO many I can’t choose just 3! 

  • Back Squats, Sled pushing/pulling, Airdyne Sprints, Ball Slams, Box Step-Ups, 400m runs


What is your favorite style workout? (AMRAP, EMOM, Rounds for Time, etc)


  • It’s easier  for me to think of the task at hand rather than lots of things written on the board...so when we focus on “A1, A2 & A3” before moving onto “B” & “C” etc my brain is happy. 

  • I enjoy some accessory work followed by a couple rounds for time - something quick & something that gets my heart racing & my body sweating 



What about your favorite workout?


  • All workouts are my favorite once I’ve completed them! I enjoy accessory work & boot camp style workouts. 


Any favorite workout songs? 


  • Any song I am familiar with or think I know the words to - you can often catch me trying to sing to the song while completing the workout.


Have you changed physically or mentally since you’ve been working out with us?


  • Definitely changed physically-I am more toned but also so much stronger.  I am challenged both physically and mentally each time I attend class. There are so many things that were and still are new to me but now I am confident the coaches will meet me where I’m at and/or encourage me to step out of my comfort zone. 


What are your current goals?


  • To continue to push myself out of my comfort zone - which sometimes means adding more weight! I am also committed to maintaining proper nutrition & drinking enough water! 


How have your goals changed since you joined? 


  • I started off attending 2 classes a week which turned into 3 which sometimes led to 4 and now I’m unlimited!!! 

  • My goals were just to get in shape before but I’m not sure I knew what that actually meant for me...I certainly was not the person who was going to have a notebook & write things down!

  • Now I am on my 2nd notebook, I keep track of the workouts & am aware of my PRs etc


What has been the biggest surprise since joining CF True?


  • How much I can actually accomplish especially when I push myself & don’t think too much…not to mention how the hubs & I are constantly thinking about how to ensure our schedules enable us to both get to class - a little friendly marital competition!


What can you do now that you couldn’t do before joining?


  • Strict handstand push ups (8 in a row w/elevation)
